A Critical Discourse of the 'King of Boys" Movie by Kemi Adetiba as Satirical to Criminalities and Godfatherism in Nigeria Politics
Abstract
In contemporary democracy issue of godfatherism has become a universal issue in the political development of many countries Nigeria inclusive. The paper is a critical discourse of the movie "King of Boys" by Kemi Adetiba as satirical to criminalities and godfatherism in Nigerian politics. Certainly, the politics of godfatherism have entered every hook and crannies of the nation and have affected the political structure of the country. This study adopted qualitative method of research utilising semantic macro structure analysis by Van Dihk (1980) to examine the manifest content of the selected media text for this study in elucidating the topic under examination, the researcher anchored the study on the Elite theory. It was found that the politics of godfatherism has a negative impact on the socio-economic and political development of the nation by confining power in the hands of the few elites at the expense of the masses (electorate). This has affected the socio-economic and political development of the nation and by extension, led to inter-party and intra-party defections, decamping and conflicts among the party members. It was, therefore, recommended that there is a need for massive political enlightenment campaigns to educate the general populace on the negative effect of political godfatherism on the political development of the nation.
