Abstract

The researchers sought to determine journalists’ awareness and use of fact-checking sites to counter misinformation about COVID-19 in Edo state. The objectives of the study were to find out the awareness of fact-checking sites among journalists in Edo state, ascertain which fact- checking sites journalists use to verify misinformation about COVID-19 and examine the challenges journalists in Edo state face in the use of fact-checking sites to counter misinformation about COVID-19. The study was anchored on the technological acceptance model. The researchers adopted a descriptive survey method. The sample size for the study is 172 respondents purposively chosen from journalists in Edo State. Findings revealed that there is a high level of awareness on fact-checking; however, they do not use the sites. Respondents indicated only one of the sites has an awareness value. The researchers, therefore, concluded that fact-checking sites were not used to verify information by journalists in Edo State. Thus, it was among others recommended that the body of journalists should have trainings on fact-checking sites.
