ANALYSIS OF THE QUALITY OF WATER USED IN IRRUA SPECIALIST TEACHING HOSPITAL (ISTH)

Abstract

Abstract: Hospitals are centers for treatment of diseases and ailments, and largely for recuperation, therefore require water beyound the requirements for living and routine cleaning. ISTH, a tertiary health institution had its routine water inflow sampled from five points; the staff quarters (SQ), Clinical ward (CW), Industrial borehole (IBH), hand dug borehole (HDBH) and treatment plant (TP). The water quality parameters monitored and their range of values across the sampling points were: pH value (5.9±0.69 – 6.4±1.02); temperature (20.8±0.17 – 28.0±0.10)0C; total solids (TS)(15.9±2.18 – 31.8±1.95)mg/l; dissolved solids(DS)(10.6±2.38 - 31.8±1.95)mg/l; conductivity(20.0±2.28 – 60.0±2.32)?S/cm; turbidity (BDL – 10.0±1.97) NTU; colour (BDL – 12) Hazen units; dissolved oxygen(DO)(3.42±1.96 – 5.95±1.86)mg/l; BOD5 (1.17±0.52 - 2.31±1.38)mg/l; COD (2.53±1.29 – 3.3±1.47)mg/l; alkalinity (24.0±1.48 – 44.0±2.04)mg/l; hardness (10.0±1.28 – 32.0±1.54)mg/l; TBC (BDL - 61?104±1.49) number/ml. Besides pH and turbidity all the parameters were within regulatory limits of WHO and the national institutes for Standards (NIS).
