ANTIDEPRESSANT AND ANXIOLYTIC PROPERTY OF JATROPHA GOSSYPIFOLIA N-HEXANE ROOT EXTRACT IN ALBINO MICE.

Abstract

atropha gossypiifolia folklore uses include, antipsychotic, anti-inflammatory, antihypertensive, antidiabetic, Haemostatic and analgesic. Depression and Anxiety are prevalent psychiatric diseases influencing 5% population rate. Phytochemical constituents in plants display defensive mechanism, protection and cure against
various diseases. This study evaluates the antidepressant and anxiolytic effects of n-Hexane extracts of J. gossypiifolia root in mice. Antidepressant property of J. gossypifolia was tested via despair swim test and tail suspension test. Anxiolytic effect was tested on mice using hole board test. The results showed a significant
decrease in immobility time of the treated groups when compared with control group, thereby indicates antidepressant efficacy. The results showed a significant reduction in the treated groups when compared with control to elicit anxiolytic property. In conclusion, n-Hexane root extract of J. gossypiifolia exhibited
antidepressant and anxiolytic activity. The extract showed a comparative activity with Amitryptiline and Diazepam.
